India’s Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, delivered a strong message at the NDTV Defence Summit, underlining the nation’s preparedness for any threats along its borders. He emphasized the constant need for vigilance, stating, “We have to be ready for war at all times… even in peacetime. We have to be ready.”
Addressing Border Issues
Singh’s comments were seen as a response to the ongoing tensions with China, particularly in Kashmir, Ladakh, and the northeastern region. The situation remains tense after a military standoff between Indian and Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh began nearly four years ago. Despite ongoing talks aimed at de-escalation, tensions persist, and India continues to urge China to adhere to border management agreements for peace to prevail.
India’s Growing Strength
While acknowledging the current strain in India-China relations, Singh asserted India’s emergence as a “key global economic and strategic power.” He reiterated India’s desire for positive relationships with all nations. Highlighting India’s transformation, Singh declared, “We are no more a weak country.” He pointed to the courage demonstrated by Indian soldiers during the Galwan standoff and the government’s focus on “Atmanirbharta” (self-reliance) in the defense sector since coming to power in 2014.
Focus on Self-Reliance
Singh emphasized the government’s prioritization of the defense sector since 2014. He highlighted the promotion of “Atmanirbharta” through “Make in India” initiatives aimed at modernizing the Indian military. While acknowledging previous administrations’ efforts, Singh stressed the current government’s unique focus on self-reliance in defense, aiming to reduce dependence on external sources for military equipment.
