The meeting comes at a time when the safety of minorities in Bangladesh has become a major concern on the global stage due to increasing attacks, arson, and desecration of religious sites.
Amid Rising Bangladesh Violence, India Raises Concerns Over Safety of Minorities
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has voiced strong concerns over the increasing violence against religious and cultural sites in Bangladesh. Highlighting the alarming rise in attacks on minorities, particularly Hindus, he called on the Bangladeshi government to take immediate and effective steps to ensure their protection and safety.
During the meeting, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri underscored India’s deep concerns regarding the escalating violence against minorities. Addressing the media afterward, Misri stated, “Today’s discussions have given both of us the opportunity to take stock of our relations, and I appreciate the chance to have had a frank, candid, and constructive exchange of views with all my interlocutors.”
He further added, “We also discussed recent developments, and I conveyed our concerns, including those related to the safety and welfare of minorities. We also discussed regrettable incidents of attacks on cultural and religious properties.”
Background of Recent Atrocities Against Hindus in Bangladesh
In recent times, violence in Bangladesh has seen an alarming surge, particularly targeting Hindus and other minority groups. These attacks have included incidents of looting, arson, and the destruction of religious symbols and temples. Many minority families have also faced targeted assaults, leaving their homes damaged and their communities in fear.
A notable incident fueling tensions was the arrest of Hindu priest Chinmoy Krishna Das in Chittagong on October 25. Das, a key spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote, was denied bail, sparking protests and widespread criticism.
India has voiced strong concerns over these developments, urging Bangladesh to protect its minority communities. On November 26, India called on Bangladeshi authorities to uphold the rights of minorities, including their safety and freedom to express themselves peacefully.
This dialogue underscores India’s commitment to addressing the safety concerns of minorities and fostering stronger bilateral ties with Bangladesh
