LGBTQIA: On May 3, the Union Government informed the Supreme Court that it will establish a committee under the direction of the Cabinet Secretary to address the real, everyday issues that members of the LGBTQIA+ community experience. Before a Constitution Bench deliberating the same-sex marriage case, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta made the following statement: “The government is positive.”

‘My friends [the petitioners] can provide me solutions to the issues they are experiencing. The committee will investigate them and make every effort to ensure that problems are remedied,’ Mehta said, ‘within the bounds of the law’. According to the government, the group will be established with consideration for the fact that the problems the community faces cross Ministries.

All adjustments that are permitted by law would be made-Tushar Mehta
The petitioners’ senior attorney, A.M. Singhvi, stated that the proceedings should continue because the government has promised to solely make administrative modifications. Although the Centre used the term “administrative,” Justice S. Ravindra Bhat said that substantive changes, even changes in the law, would have to be taken into consideration. According to Tushar Mehta, all adjustments that are permitted by law would be made.
