CM Shivraj expressed happiness
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has expressed happiness after getting the title of Tiger State on the head of Madhya Pradesh. He tweeted that ‘It is a matter of great pleasure that as a result of the cooperation of our people and the untiring efforts of the Forest Department, the number of tigers, the king of the jungle, in our state has increased from 526 to 785 in four years. The CM said that I heartily thank and congratulate the people of the entire state for their cooperation in the protection of forests and wildlife. All together take a pledge to conserve nature for future generations on the occasion of International Tiger Day.”
In 2022, India reported a record number of tigers, with Madhya Pradesh having the highest population at 785 tigers, followed by Karnataka (563), Uttarakhand (560), and Maharashtra (444). About a quarter of the tigers were found outside protected areas.
The estimated tiger population in India was approximately 3,582, with a likely range of 3,167 to 3,925. This estimation was based on camera trap data and educated guesses for unphotographed tigers.
Nearly 88% of the tigers were captured on camera during the survey, the highest success rate in such surveys so far. However, it was cautioned that future tiger population growth might not be as dramatic as seen in recent years. Since 2014, India’s tiger population has been increasing by about 5% to 6% annually.
