IRCTC luggage regulations 2022: Railways have been a popular mode of transportation for many passengers due to the allowance of unlimited luggage and the fact that it never charged any additional fees for luggage. However, with the implementation of new luggage rules issued by the Indian Railways, passengers will now be required to limit their luggage or be willing to pay an additional fee, similar to air travel.
In a recent tweet , the Ministry of Railways advised people not to travel with excess luggage. “If the luggage is heavier, the enjoyment of the journey will be cut in half!” Do not travel by train with additional luggage. “Go to the parcel office and book the luggage if you have excess baggage,” read the tweet.
How much free luggage is permitted?
According to the new rules, a sleeper-class passenger can carry up to 40kg of luggage without paying extra. Passengers travelling in second class can also bring up to 35kg of luggage. Passengers will now have to book and pay extra for extra luggage weighing up to 70-80 kgs.
Excess luggage charges
According to the new guidelines, any rail passenger found with excess and un-booked baggage will be fined six times the luggage price. For example, if a passenger is travelling 500 kilometres with excess luggage weighing 40 kg, he or she can book it in a luggage van for Rs 109. However, if the passenger is caught with excess luggage during the journey, he or she will be fined Rs 654.
Luggage Dimensions
The new guidelines recommend that trunks, suitcases, and boxes be no larger than 100cms x 60cms x 25cms when used as personal luggage. However, if a passenger is travelling in an AC 3 tier or AC chair car compartment, the suitcase/trunk/box cannot be larger than 55cms x 45cms x 22.5cms.
