Is International Olympic Committee Biased Against India? Nation Fuels with Anger over Vinesh Phogat’s Disqualification

Indian Wrestler Vinesh Phogat's Disqualification Sparks Allegations of Bias and National Outcry

Vinesh Phogat

For being overweight, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the 50kg women’s wrestling competition at the Olympics in Paris. With profound sadness, the Indian contingent revealed that, in spite of their best efforts over the night, Vinesh’s weight this morning was marginally over the 50 kg limit. In order to concentrate on the ongoing contests, the team has asked for Vinesh’s privacy. Anger and dissatisfaction have spread throughout India as a result of this tragedy. Many people are expressing their displeasure and fury about the disqualification on Twitter with the hashtag #Boycott, which is now trending.

Allegations of Bias

Allegations of bias by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have added to the debate. Just a few days ago, Imane Khelif, an Algerian boxer, was granted permission to compete in the Olympics even though she is biologically male. There has been a great deal of uncertainty and criticism over this decision. Khelif had already failed a gender eligibility test, which resulted in his disqualification from the 2023 world championships. However, the fact that she was allowed to compete in the Olympics in Paris raises concerns about the impartiality and consistency of the IOC’s rulings.

Political Reactions and Support

The disqualification has not only ignited public outrage but also prompted significant political reactions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his support for Vinesh, stating, “Vinesh, you are a champion among champions! You are India’s pride and an inspiration for every Indian. Today’s setback hurts. I wish words could express the sense of despair that I am experiencing. At the same time, I know that you epitomize resilience. It has always been your nature to take challenges head-on. Come back stronger! We are all rooting for you.”

PM Modi has spoken to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha, seeking detailed information and exploring all possible options to support Vinesh. He urged PT Usha to file a strong protest against the disqualification if it would help Vinesh’s case.

Akhilesh Yadav also emphasized the need for an investigation, saying, “There should be a thorough investigation into the technical reasons behind the discussion about Vinesh Phogat not being able to play in the final, and it should be ensured what is the truth and the real reason behind it.”

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor expressed his disappointment, stating, “Vinesh’s triumph up to this point has been hugely impressive. She has shown courage, ability, and a tremendous amount of determination. For me, she has won our hearts. I am very disappointed with this news about her technical disqualification. I don’t know how such a thing could have happened, whether our coaches were found wanting in terms of ensuring all the right rules and limits to adhere to. To me, the sad thing is that all her efforts did not get the reward that she deserved.”

Union Minister Amit Shah taking to twitter stated, “Vinesh Phogat’s setback in the Olympics has certainly broken the hopes of millions of Indians. She has a brilliant sporting career, shining with the glory of defeating the world champion. This misfortune is merely an exception in her trailblazing career, from which I am sure she will bounce back to be the winner she always is. Our best wishes and support are always with her.”

AAP Leader Sanjay Singh also expressed his displeasure over the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat he wrote, ” This is not an insult to Vinesh but to the country. @Phogat_Vinesh was going to create history in the whole world. It is a grave injustice to disqualify her by showing her to be 100 grams overweight. The whole country stands with Vinesh. The Indian government should intervene immediately. If this is not accepted then boycott the Olympics.”
