Janmashtami 2023: Every year, the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami is celebrated with grandeur throughout the country. Also referred to as Gokulashtami, Shrikrishna Jayanti, Krishnasthami, and Krishna Janmashtami, the festival is observed on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the Bhadrapad month. Nevertheless, this year has brought about uncertainty regarding the accurate date for the festivities. Devotees of Lord Krishna are grappling with whether to observe Janmashtami on September 6 or 7.
Janmashtami 2023 Significance
Janmashtami holds significance as the celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth anniversary. On this occasion, followers of Lord Krishna engage in worshiping his infant form, known as Bal Gopal, and Laddu Gopal. According to Vedic records, this year marks the 5250th birthday of Lord Krishna. Celebrants will engage in activities like temple visits, fasting, cleaning their residences, preparing meals, adorning Lord Krishna’s idol, and more. While the festival is observed nationwide, the grandest festivities unfold in Mathura and Vrindavan, believed to be Lord Krishna’s birthplace and childhood years’ abode, respectively.
When is the Janmashtami 2023?
Krishna Janmashtami is traditionally celebrated on the eighth day of the dark fortnight in the Bhadrapada month. In Hindu mythology, it’s believed that Krishna was born under the Rohini Nakshatra on this day. According to Drik Panchang, this year’s Janmashtami will span consecutive days due to the alignment of Rohini Nakshatra and Ashtami Tithi during the night. While the Ashtami Tithi will begin at 3:37 pm on September 6 and conclude at 4:14 pm on September 7, the Rohini Nakshatra will initiate at 9:20 am on September 6 and end at 10:25 am on September 7. As a result, Janmashtami will be celebrated on both September 6 and 7. While Janmashtami falls on September 6, Dahi Handi festivities will take place on September 7.
