N Valarmathi: Scientist N Valarmathi of the Indian Space and Research Organisation (ISRO), whose voice became recognisable during rocket countdown launches, passed away on Saturday. Her most recent countdown took place during Chandrayaan-3‘s launch, India’s grand lunar mission that changed history.
Tributes and Personal Reflections on Valarmathi’s Legacy
A former ISRO Director Dr. P V Venkitakrishnan took to X, formerly Twitter, to condole her demise and wrote, ”The voice of Valarmathi Madam will not be there for the countdowns of future missions of ISRO from Sriharikotta. Chandrayan 3 was her final countdown announcement. An unexpected demise . Feel so sad. Pranams!” She reportedly had a heart attack on Saturday night and passed away in Chennai. Ms. Valarmathi was born on July 31, 1959, in Ariyalur, Tamil Nadu. After attending the Nirmala Girls Higher Secondary School, she attended the Government College of Technology in Coimbatore, where she received her engineering degree.
Pioneering Achievements and Recognition
The scientist became a member of ISRO in 1984 and was essential to many missions. She served as the project director for RISAT-1, the country’s second radar imaging satellite (RIS), and the first to be produced entirely in India. She was the inaugural recipient of the Abdul Kalam Award, which the Tamil Nadu government established in 2015 in memory of the late president Abdul Kalam. Social media is flooded with condolences in honour of the deceased ISRO scientist.
