The external affairs minister, S Jaishankar, praised the efforts of the Indian embassy in Tunisia on Monday following the successful repatriation of 17 youths from Libya. He added that the Modi government’s reinforcement of the “Indian Community Welfare Fund” is especially helpful during such times.

Jaishankar, in a post on ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter), said, “Good work @IndiainTunisia. Modi Government’s strengthening of the Indian Community Welfare Fund is particularly useful on such occasions.”

On August 19, the Indian Embassy in Tunisia successfully returned 17 Indians from Punjab and Haryana who had been held in Libya since February of this year. Travel agencies had tricked them into believing they would be sent to Italy, which is why they ended up in Libya.

Over the course of more than six months, about seventeen young people from various states—eight from Haryana, four from Punjab, one from Jammu, and one from Shima, Himachal Pradesh—have been detained when they arrived in Libya rather than Italy, where they were intended to go.

AAP Rajya Sabha MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney was crucial in their evacuation.

Letters urging to leave libya

After getting in touch with these young people, Vikramjit Singh Sahney addressed these people letters urging them to leave Libya and afterwards contacted the Ministry of External Affairs. Subsequently, he made contact with the Indian Embassy’s Ambassador and requested that they transport these individuals to India.

Vikramjit Singh Sahney, on Monday, requested on the social media platform X that Punjab’s Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Haryana’s Chief Minister Manohar Lal take prompt action against the agents who had duped these young people who were supposed to travel to Italy but were instead taken to Libya.

“With blessings of Akalpurakh Waheguru jee we spearheaded successful evacuation of 17 youth of Punjab and Haryana from gallows of death in Libya where unscruplous agents duped them after taking 13 Lakh each. @BhagwantMann @mlkhattar immediate Firs shd be registered against agents who committed this heinous crime @sunfoundationIn @wpo,” Singh said in a post shared on X.
