Janmashtami 2023: Janmashtami is observed as the birth anniversary of Lord Shri Krishna, with devotees worshipping the child form of Krishna known as Laddu Gopal. Many people choose to bring the idol of Lord Krishna into their homes for this auspicious occasion and offer their devotion. If you intend to invite Lord Krishna into your home, it’s essential to familiarise yourself with the proper protocols for serving and worshipping him.
Four crucial things to know before celebrating Janmashtami 2023
1. Idol worshipping
Regularly bathing Lord Krishna in the morning, using either cold or hot water depending on the weather, is a customary practice. Following the bath, dressing them in clean attire is essential, taking into consideration the weather conditions; lighter clothing is suitable for summers, while woollen attire is appropriate for winters. It is customary to change Lord Krishna‘s clothes daily as part of the worship rituals.
2. Food
On Janmashtami, it is customary to consume Satvik Bhojan, which excludes the use of garlic and onions in food due to their considered tamasic nature. Additionally, it is not advisable to consume meat and alcohol on this day. Milk and curd hold significant importance in the Janmashtami ceremony and are integral to completing the festival. During fasting, one can enjoy fresh fruit shakes or relish delightful options such as lassi, buttermilk, or rose milk.
3. Decoration
Prepare flower garlands and other temple decorations in advance of Janmashtami celebrations. To welcome Lord Krishna and set a magnificent ambience, adorn the temple elegantly on the day of Janmashtami. Engage in the religious and festive aspects of the event by organising and beautifying the temple with your dear ones. Common Janmashtami decorations encompass flower garlands, although Hindu temples may also incorporate leaves and balloons for embellishment.
4. Fasting
As part of your worship, take a sankalpa or pledge to observe the fast with unwavering devotion to Lord Krishna, ensuring you adhere to all the rules without any negligence. While making this commitment, continue to chant the name of Lord Krishna as an integral part of your devotion.
