Concerns over recent changes to the postal ballot counting regulations have been expressed by senior Congress leader and advocate Kapil Sibal. He argues that these changes could make it easier to manipulate the vote count and calls on the Election Commission to impose severe penalties on those who do so.

Voting Rights in Danger?

Kapil Sibal underlined the value of voting in a democracy in an interview with ANI. He said, “Voting is a sacred right in a democracy. If there is some scam or violation of this right…it’s a serious question that the Election Commission should address and ask the govt to bring a law that if anyone violates this, the person should be punished,” he stated.

The Need for Vigilance

In order to guarantee that the number of votes cast is correct, Sibal emphasised the need of political party agents closely examining Form 17C at counting centres. He asked the agents to carefully review every detail on paperwork pertaining to the counting of votes. Because of the updated procedures for tallying postal ballots and the detailed instructions provided by the Election Commission about these modifications, increased attention to detail is necessary.

Changes to Postal Ballot Counting Rules

Prior to the last round of counting, the postal ballot count was initially scheduled to be finished. Postal ballots may now, however, be counted whenever they choose according to an administrative order issued by the Election Commission. Sibal voiced his concerns about this move, pointing out that there are now a lot more postal ballots. He issued a warning, saying that this may result in manipulation in areas where the outcome of an election depends on a narrow margin of votes.
