The security of electronic voting machines (EVMs) has been a major topic of discussion following a recent opinion exchange between billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk and former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar. In keeping with this ongoing conversation, Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal has now expressed his backing for Chandrasekhar, highlighting the Supreme Court’s confidence in the administration, electronic voting machines, and the Indian Election Commission.
Kapil Sibal’s Statement
Experienced politician and lawyer Kapil Sibal commended Rajeev Chandrasekhar for his profound grasp of scientific aspects, perhaps more than Elon Musk.
Sibal further reinforced his stance by referencing the Supreme Court’s trust in the government and its electoral machinery. He said, “What should I further say if the Supreme Court has said that it has trust in the govt, machines and the Election Commission of India? If the SC gives its verdict based on trust, I choose not to say anything.”
Background of the EVM Debate
Elon Musk’s Concerns
The debate started when Elon Musk questioned the security of EVMs in a post on the social media site X (previously Twitter), implying that even a small chance of hacking is unacceptable. A wider conversation regarding the dependability of electronic voting systems resulted from Musk’s remarks, which sparked concerns about the devices’ possible weaknesses.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s Rebuttal
Rajeev Chandrasekhar responded by defending the safety of Indian EVMs. He clarified that, in contrast to certain systems utilised in other areas, Indian EVMs are specially created, safe, and totally separated from any network or media. These devices are factory programmed, according to Chandrasekhar, and cannot be altered or reprogrammed. He went so far as to provide Musk a tutorial to show him how reliable Indian EVMs are.
Elon Musk’s Retort
In response, Elon Musk said, “Anything can be hacked,” acknowledging the potential for hacking in theory.
