The ruling BJP in Karnataka took a U-turn on Thursday after its decision to set up 10 new colleges for Muslim girls. When asked about this, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai clarified on Thursday that there has been no discussion on this matter at the government level. He said, these could be the personal views of Shafi Saadi, President of the Karnataka State Waqf Board.
The government has no idea of opening a separate school for Muslim girls. He said that the chairman of the Waqf Board should discuss the matter with the government. Earlier, it was reported in the media that the ruling government was planning to build 10 new colleges for Muslim girls, which sparked a huge controversy in Karnataka.
Maulana Shafi Saadi said that he never said that special colleges would be opened for Muslim women
Hindu organizations had warned of statewide protests and challenged the government that they would not allow the college to be built. Following Bommai’s reaction on the issue, Waqf Board chairman Maulana Shafi Saadi said that he never said that special colleges would be opened for Muslim women.
He said, I had talked about opening a college for women. I had said that our board has a fund of Rs 25 crore. We will give Rs 2.5 crore for each college and they will be started in 10 districts and this matter has been discussed with the minister.
Waqf Board is running 112 educational institutions
He said, my complete statement is not being published by the media. My statement has been twisted. The Waqf Board is running 112 educational institutions as per the norms of the Government. There is nothing to do with the hijab crisis and the proposed colleges and they too will work as per the guidelines. He said that this project is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s slogan ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’.
Earlier, Hindu organizations had expressed strong resentment when the matter of setting up a separate college for Muslim girls came to the fore. Mohan Gowda, leader of the Hindu Jan Jagruti Samiti, had warned that if colleges are being built only for Muslim girls, then Hindu colleges, universities should also be built.
