Women should take a vow (Sankalp) to keep the fast for the sake of the husband, refrain from eating or drinking anything, and only break the fast after seeing the moon. The evening is the ideal time to perform the Karwa Chauth puja, and women typically gather in groups to tell the Karwa Chauth tale. One should wait for the moon to rise after the puja is finished, worship the moon, and then break the fast after making the offerings.

Married women get up early on Karwa Chauth to take a bath and eat Sargi before the sun rises. As part of the sargi custom, the mother-in-law gives the daughter-in-law a thali filled with edibles like sweets, dry fruits, and coconut as well as presents like saris. After that, women begin the nirjala fast, during which they go an entire day without eating or drinking anything. In the evening, they carry out all the other rites, which includes hearing the Karwa Chauth Katha.
Following the moonrise, women use a sieve to view the moon and their husbands, make offerings to the moon, and break their fast by drinking water and eating a small amount of food from their husbands’ hands. Women don traditional attire, bindis, jewellery, make-up, and other bridal-like accessories during the puja. Additionally, they use Mehendi and Alta on their hands and feet.
