A Day of Complete Fasting

Married women observe a nirjala vrat for their husbands’ long lives on this day, starting at sunrise and ending at moonrise. They fast all day and only break their fast after worshipping the moon and making a sacrifice of Arghya. They also don’t drink or eat during the day. To break the vrat, their husband gives them a bite-sized meal and a drink of water. Consequently, one of the most important rituals of the Karwa Chauth fast is seeing the moon.
