Arvind Kejriwal: Aam Aadmi Party supremo Arvind Kejriwal launched a broadside against the BJP today saying its canard on implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is only to throw wool over the people’s eyes. Kejriwal said this today in Bhavnagar, Gujarat while campaigning for the upcoming assembly elections, said that the BJP is bluffing the people about implementing a civil code in the state of Gujarat.
Repeating promises
Questioning the BJP-led state government’s intentions, the AAP honcho remarked that the ruling dispensation is only repeating the same poll promise it dished out before the Uttarakhand assembly elections but backed down after winning the elections.
“They formed a committee after winning the Uttarakhand elections, now that has disappeared,” he said, saying they are following the same formula by forming a panel “three days before Gujarat elections” which too will meet the same fate once elections are over.
Consent must
At a press conference held in Bhavnagar, Kejriwal made a strong case for the UCC to be implemented, saying Article 44 of the Constitution mentions that it is the duty of the government to do so. However, he added a rider saying it should be done only by bringing all stakeholders and communities on board. It is only after their consent that it should be done, he added.
Arvind Kejriwal also pointedly asked why the ruling party doesn’t do the same in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh where it is in power. “Why not implement it across the country. Are they waiting for the Lok Sabha elections?” he thundered.
Cong agrees
The Congress too, echoed Kejriwal’s sentiments that it was a ploy to appease the Hindu majority.
Meanwhile, the Gujarat government proposed the setting up of a committee led by a retired High Court judge to examine how such legislation can be implemented. However, as a rule, civil code is widely believed to be the domain of the Centre and not the states.
“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has taken a historic decision in the Cabinet meeting today – of forming a committee for implementing the Uniform Civil Code in the state,” disclosed Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi.
