Ashish More, the services secretary, was removed from office by the AAP-led Delhi government on Thursday, just hours after the Supreme Court granted the AAP government authority over the posting and removal of officers in the state. A K Singh, a 1995-batch (AGMUT cadre) IAS officer, will succeed More as the former CEO of the Delhi Jal Board.
At a news conference, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced a significant administrative shake-up and threatened to take action against any officials who “obstructed” public works. According to him, transfers would be made based on the work the officers have completed.
“Some officers, who in the last one and a half years obstructed the work of the people of Delhi, stopped the supply of medicines to mohalla clinics and hospitals, stopped water supply at some places…will have to pay for their deeds,” he said.
The chief minister emphasised that police who are “efficient, honest, responsive, and compassionate” will have the chance to serve Delhi’s citizens. “There will also be an overhaul of the administrative system. The entire system is rotten. We will create a system that is accountable and responsible towards the public,” he said.
The AAP government has accused senior officials for impeding its work, including chief secretary Naresh Kumar and principal secretary (finance) Ashish Chandra Verma. HT contacted Kumar and Verma for their comments on Kejriwal’s remarks. However, there were no prompt responses.
The Delhi government has legislative and executive authority over the provision of services, with the exception of subjects pertaining to public order, police, and land, according to a ruling made by the highest court earlier in the day. The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi was in charge of the Services department prior to the court’s ruling.
