The Kerala government amended the Kerala Kalamandalam deemed University’s rules on Thursday to remove the governor from the role of chancellor, which would now be filled by an accomplished figure in the field of art and culture.
The deemed university of art and culture’s rules and regulations were amended by an order issued by the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government. On the website of the Kerala Kalamandalam, Khan is named as the current chancellor.
The development coincides with the government’s ongoing dispute with Khan over university operations in the state, including the selection of vice chancellors, and its announcement that it would issue an ordinance to remove Khan from his position and replace him with eminent academicians as president of Kerala’s universities.
After Khan refused to sign 11 ordinances presented by the government, including one that restricted the authority of the Lokayukta (anti-corruption ombudsman) and another that restricted his own authority as chancellor of state universities, the latest dispute between the LDF government and Khan erupted in August.

Khan did not sign the ordinances relating to the Lokayukta and university appointments, but he did sign the other nine.
The appointment of MS Rajashree as vice chancellor of the APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University was annulled by the Supreme Court on October 22 due to a rule breach by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The court noted that no search committee had been established to choose a V-C and that Rajashree had not been chosen from a shortlist of three candidates.
