The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, started the “Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana” (KVPY) initiative in 1999 to encourage students who are majoring in basic sciences to pursue research careers in science. The program’s goal is to find exceptional students who are determined to pursue careers in research and to support them in doing so.
The purpose of this programme is to help the students reach their full potential and to make sure that the nation’s top scientific talent is developed for research and development. The chosen KVPY Fellows receive generous fellowship and contingency grants up to the pre-Ph.D. level or 5 years, whichever is earlier. In addition, elite research and educational institutions around the nation host summer camps for KVPY Fellows.
The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore has been given overall responsibility for organising and managing the KVPY Program by the Department of Science and Technology, the nodal agency of the Government. A Management Committee and a National Advisory Committee (NAC) have been established to oversee its implementation. The KVPY Program’s operational and academic facets are overseen by a core group.
