An assistant professor at Kolkata’s St Xavier’s University was forced to resign in October last year for posting pictures in a swimsuit.
There was a lot of uproar over the St Xavier’s University professor wearing a swimsuit and sharing the pictures on social media. The incident took place in October last year, when a student’s parent complained that he had noticed his son looking at photos of her in a bikini on Instagram.
In their complaint, the student’s kin argued that ‘it is obscene, indecent and inappropriate for an 18-year-old student to see his professor wearing short clothes displaying her body on a public platform’.
“Recently, I was appalled to find my son looking at some pictures of Prof. where she has posed in a sexually explicit way causing deliberate public exposure. To look at a teacher dressed in her undergarments and uploading pictures on social media is utterly shameful for me as a parent since I have tried to shield my son from this kind of gross indecency and objectification of the female body. It is obscene, vulgar, and improper for an 18-year-old student to see his professor dressed in scanty clothes exhibiting her body on a public platform,” the complaint letter reads..
While according to media reports, the professor claimed that she was forced to quit the university after receiving a written complaint from a first-year male undergraduate student’s father last year. But St. Xavier has denied the allegations and said that the assistant professor resigned by choice.
In the complainant letter the parent said that he had caught his son looking at pictures of the university professor that were “objectionable”, “vulgar” and “bordered on nudity”.
She argued that her Instagram profile is private and hence no one can see the pictures there except her followers. She also expressed apprehension that her Instagram profile may have been hacked.
However, university officials refused to accept her argument and she was given the option to resign or be dismissed. After resigning, she lodged an FIR with the Kolkata Police, claiming that her Instagram account may have been hacked.
In this counter legal notice, the university authorities have also sought compensation of Rs 99 crore for damages. In response, the university demanded the professor pay Rs 99 crore for damaging the reputation of the institution.
Meanwhile, netizens in the city are expressing different opinions about the developments. While some people are trying to bash the assistant professor on social media on moral grounds, there are others who say that whatever one does beyond her professional field is their personal life.
