Kolkata Rape Case: Indian travel content creator Tanya Khanijow, who is presently living in Finland, sparked an uproar on social media when she advised female travellers to stay away from India because of safety concerns. Her comments were a reaction to the horrifying event that happened recently at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital involving a trainee doctor. It was alleged that the young woman was murdered while on duty and that she was raped.
Influencer’s Call to Action Raises Eyebrows
Taking to a popular social media platform (formerly known as Twitter), Khanijow stated, “Safety standards for women in India are horrible. My sincere request to all my women friends abroad. Please don’t travel here unless our dear leadership seriously creates a safer environment for women. Please avoid coming to India at all costs!”
Finland’s Sexual Assault Problem Ignored
After Khanijow’s tweet went viral, many criticised it. Her social media profile indicates that she is residing in Finland, a country that itself has witnessed a disturbing rise in sexual offenses. According to a report from the Helsinki Times dated January 18, 2024, Finland experienced a 29.6% increase in reported sexual offenses in 2023, with 7,100 cases recorded—a surge of 1,600 more cases than in the previous year. Social Media Backlash Erupts
Social media users were quick to call out the apparent contradiction in Khanijow’s statements. One user commented, “Ok! Don’t come!! Where is women safety in the whole world?” Another expressed their displeasure by saying, “Unsubscribed from your YT channel. My sincere request to all Tanya’s followers to unsubscribe her.” A third user criticized her for not advocating for police reforms in India, accusing her of choosing an “easy way out” by creating outrage.
Shocking Revelations in Kolkata Rape Case
Unsettling information from the Kolkata rape case, in which a trainee doctor was brutally raped before being killed, came to light in recent postmortem findings. Protests have broken out all throughout the country, from Patna to Delhi and Maharashtra, in response to this horrifying news. OPD services were also interrupted in a number of regions as medical professionals joined protests and called for the victim’s justice.
