Kolkata Rape Case: Nationwide Doctors’ Strike Hits Delhi to West Bengal, Medical College Chief Resigns Amid Protests

Medical workers throughout the country have gone on strike in response to the gruesome murder of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.

Kolkata Rape Case: A trainee female doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, was brutally killed in its seminar hall, leading to widespread protests and strikes across the country, with medics and students from Kolkata to Delhi literally paralyzed.

Gruesome Murder of Trainee Doctor Sparks Nationwide Outrage

The murdered postgraduate trainee doctor was said to have been murdered in a gruesome manner. The medical fraternity, without surprise, is up in arms against this dastardly act. Doctors and medical students across the country have gone on strike, demanding justice for the murdered doctor and drawing the government’s attention to install better security arrangements in medical institutions.

Against this rising tide of anger, Dr. Sandeep Ghosh has resigned the post of Principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital. Dr. Ghosh resigned at a time when serious condemnation and allegations have been brought against him. Dr. Ghosh told the media: “I am extremely sorry and disgruntled. I am being defamed on social MEDIA.”. He was just like one of my daughters, the doctor who passed away. I resign his guardianship. No one should suffer such an incident in the future.

Nationwide Unrest Continues

The resignation of Dr. Ghosh was an important one but it did not hold the huge wave of unrest happening. The trainee doctor incident has shocked the local community and caused an uproar against such an incident across the nation. Now the demonstration is even on its way in the rest of the cities, including Patna, Lucknow, Maharashtra, and Delhi. The medical fraternity has raised the issue of lapses in the government for not providing a secure environment to them and is demanding reforms to stop this.

The strike is noticed to be so disruptful of health services, as many patients in the country have had problems in receiving timely treatment that they need. With Indian doctors from all over the country calling in sick for work, the number of doctors present to manage treatment services are very scanty.

West Bengal Government’s Commitment

In the meantime, the West Bengal government has promised that the issue will be taken care of without wasting time. The CM has been adamant about the probe and set a deadline for the police to resolve the case. She made it clear that if the police do not make major breakthroughs by Sunday, the case will be handed over to the CBI for investigation. This crucial move underlines how the government sees the seriousness of the situation and its commitment to ensuring justice for the victim.

An arrest regarding the case has already been made. The prime suspect, Sanjay Roy, has been arrested and is now in police custody, with a remand for 14 days. How the case shapes up further ahead is something yet to be observed.

As the situation develops further, there is an entire medical professional who is stressed, and the public is under a close look. Protests and strikes have highlighted the issues of security and safety not only in terms of the individual tragedy of a trainee doctor being murdered but in the medical institutions all over India.
