Kupwara Encounter: Five Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants attempting to cross the Line of Control (LoC) in northern Kashmir’s Kupwara district were eliminated during an encounter with security forces, as confirmed by officials. The Indian Army’s Chinar Corps, in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Police, successfully thwarted this infiltration bid. While the identification of the slain terrorists is ongoing, the operation is still in progress.
Challenging nature of the LoC border region
Authorities highlighted the challenging nature of the LoC border region, known for its history of facilitating infiltration attempts. Jammu and Kashmir’s director general of police (DGP), Dilbag Singh, emphasized that numerous camps and launching pads were located across the LoC in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), from where terrorists were dispatched to infiltrate India.
Weapon and narco smuggling
These places were also utilized for weapon and narco smuggling. Despite an expected surge in infiltration attempts before the onset of winter, security forces had managed to counter many such endeavors. The DGP noted a decline in the number of terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir.
The operation followed a recent incident in the Uri sector of Baramulla district, where two terrorists were killed during a thwarted infiltration attempt. However, their associates were able to retrieve their bodies to the other side of the LoC, leading to the recovery of various arms, ammunition, and other items at the site.
