Lady Singham: A woman sub-inspector of the Assam police, embroiled in various controversies, lost her life after her car collided with a container truck in Nagaon district, officials said.
The accident took place in Sarubhugia village under Jakhalabandha police station in Kaliabori division early on Tuesday, news agency PTI reported. Late Junmoni Rabha, popularly known as ‘Lady Singham’ or ‘Dabangg Cop’, named after two popular Bollywood films, was not in uniform and was alone in her car at the time of the accident.
What can be the reasons?
“After being informed around 2:30 am, a police patrol reached the spot and took him to a nearby hospital. There doctors declared him brought dead,” said Jakhalabandha Superintendent of Police Pawan Kalita.
The policewoman, who was the head of the Morikolong police outpost, was known for being tough on criminals. He was in the news for his alleged involvement in financial irregularities.
Last year, he was arrested on charges of cheating on his fiance and was later arrested in the same case. He was imprisoned by the Majuli District Court and dismissed from service. However, his suspension was later lifted and he returned to duty.
Lady Singham: Case to be investigated by CID
The CID said it was investigating the accident and an extortion case was registered against him before his death. The police seized a container truck whose driver fled the scene after the accident. The truck had a registration number of Uttar Pradesh.
Nagaon Police Chief Leena Doley arrived at the accident site on Wednesday morning to assess the situation.
The police are yet to explain why the sub-inspector was dressed in civilian clothes and traveled alone in a personal vehicle without security to Upper Assam. According to the report, Junmoni Rabha was cremated in Guwahati after a post mortem was conducted at Nagaon Civil Hospital.
