Acting suo motu in Lakhimpur Kheri incident, the Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday told the Uttar Pradesh government to file a status report as to who have been named as accused in the case related to “murder of eight people” and whether they have been arrested or not.
Chief Justice Ramana said the status report should contain details of the eight persons killed in the incident.
The order came as the top court a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana was hearing the matter.
Apprising court on the steps taken so far in the investigation, the Uttar Pradesh government said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the case. The government has also formed “a single-member enquiry commission,” it informed the court.

The apex court has posted the matter for hearing on Friday.
Earlier in the day, the SC had said it would like to hear the two lawyers who had written a letter seeking a high-level judicial inquiry, also involving the CBI, into the Lakhimpur Kheri incident in which eight people were killed in violence during a farmers’ protest.
The bench said that the letter was to be registered as a PIL and due to some miscommunication it was listed as the suo motu (on its own) case.
