Lala Lajpat Rai was born on 28 January 1865 in Dudhekhe village which is presently located in Moga district of Punjab. He was the eldest son of Munshi Radha Kishan Azad and Gulab Devi. His father was a Baniya caste Agarwal. Since childhood, his mother taught him high moral values.
Since childhood, he had great passion for country service and pledged to liberate the country from foreign rule. During college days he came in contact with patriot figures and freedom fighters like Lal Hans Raj and Pandit Guru Dutt. Lajpat Rai was a champion of the revolutionary path to liberate the country. He was against the policy of the Indian National Congress. Along with Bipin Chandra Pal, Aurobindo Ghosh and Bal Gangadhar Tilak, he also believed that the Congress policy was having a negative effect. He advocated complete swaraj.
Lala Lajpat Rai has a prominent image as a nationalist leader. Lala Lajpat Rai not only defeated the British rulers’ intentions by making powerful speeches against British rule, but also because of their unwavering patriotism towards the country, they were called ‘Punjab Kesari’ or ‘Lion of Punjab’.
Lala Lajpat Rai fought fiercely till his last breath to liberate slave India and he was martyred.
