Lateral Entry Scheme: In a significant move, the Modi government is set to welcome twenty-five private sector specialists into key positions within the Centre, aiming to enhance governance efficiency. Approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the appointments include three joint secretaries and twenty-two directors/deputy secretaries across various central government departments.

Launched in 2018, the lateral entry scheme targets recruitment at the joint secretary, director, and deputy secretary levels, crucial for policy-making. These officers, integrated into the government system through lateral entry, contribute significantly to shaping policies and governance.
The lateral entry initiative was inaugurated in June 2018, with the Personnel Ministry inviting applications for ten joint secretary-rank posts. Recruitment for these positions was conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), underscoring the government’s commitment to leveraging private sector expertise for public service enhancement.
