Lok Sabha Speaker Election: Lok Sabha has got its new speaker. Opposition candidate K Suresh has been defeated by NDA candidate Om Birla in the speaker election. Let us tell you that he will take charge for the second time. The 18th session of the Lok Sabha has started. The majority of MPs have sworn in. It is known that today at 11 am is when the 18th Lok Sabha election’s speaker will be chosen. Owing to disagreements between the India Alliance and the NDA, the opposition has put up K Suresh to be Speaker. But when it comes to the numbers, the NDA has a resounding majority. It is thought that the NDA won’t face any difficulties in winning the Speaker position. Notably, Om Birla has been put forward by the NDA for the position of Speaker.
Election Process and Eligibility
A simple majority is used to elect the Speaker, with consideration given to the number of MPs present and eligible to vote. Five Opposition MPs and two Independents make up the seven MPs who have not taken an oath and are therefore unable to cast ballots, according to sources.
After exchanging brief words in Singh’s office, Union Minister Amit Shah, JP Nadda, Rajnath Singh, and the INDIA bloc’s KC Venugopal from the Congress and TR Baalu from the DMK were unable to resolve the problem. The NDA and the Opposition both stuck to their views. Later, Lalan Singh of JD(U) and Piyush Goyal of the BJP charged that the opposition was using pressure tactics.
Speaking to news agency ANI, Congress MP K Suresh, INDIA alliance’s candidate for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker, said, “Number is not an issue but the only issue is tradition – the ruling party, NDA has broken the tradition. That is why we are contesting (the election).”
NDA’s Numerical Strength
The NDA has 293 MPs compared to the Opposition’s 232 seats. Additionally, it is depending on the four YSR Congress MPs of YS Jaganmohan Reddy for backing. When the Congress chose to field K Suresh on Tuesday, just ten minutes before the deadline of noon, the stage was set for the election. The focus would be on BJP members Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Amit Shah, and Nitin Garkari, among others, in addition to PM Modi and Rajnath Singh, who will move the first and second proposals, respectively. NDA leaders Lalan Singh of JD(U), Jitan Ram Manjhi of Hindustani Awam Morcha, Prataprao Jadhav of Shiv Sena, HD Kumaraswamy of Janata Dal (Secular), and Anupriya Patel of Apna Dal (Soneylal) would also move proposals in support of Om Birla.
Confidence in Victory
Hajipur MP Chirag Paswan while talking to the media said that “Union Minister Chirag Paswan says on the Lok Sabha Speaker election, “We are 100 percent confident about our victory. When Om Birla wins this election, the number of votes will also increase. We were ready to discuss this, Rajnath Singh was discussing with him for the post of Deputy Speaker in front of us, but the way the opposition tried to put conditions on it was not right”.
Let us tell you that at first, the opposition and the government appeared to be in agreement. It is being reported, meanwhile, that the talks broke down because the government refused to agree to providing the opposition a deputy speaker position. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju were proposed by the administration to advocate for reaching an agreement on a nominee for the position of Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
