On Friday, a report about the “cash-for-query” case of Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra will be presented by the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee. The report, which called for Moitra to be removed from Parliament, had already been scheduled for the lower house’s December 4 agenda but had not been presented. This came about as a result of multiple opposition MPs insisting that the ethics panel’s recommendations be discussed before the Trinamool Congress MP was chosen.
The ethics panel endorsed Moitra’s removal
The ethics panel, chaired by Vinod Kumar Sonkar, had endorsed its findings suggesting Moitra’s removal from the Lok Sabha due to the ‘cash-for-query’ accusation on November 9. Six panellists voted in favour of the report, including Congress MP Preneet Kaur, who had previously been suspended from the historic party for anti-party activities. Dissent notes were submitted by four opposition party panel members.
How Mahua Moitra can be expelled?
The opposition members referred to the report as a “fixed match” and said that there was not a single “shred of evidence” to back up the complaint that BJP Lok Sabha member Nishikant Dubey had submitted. The ‘cash-for-query’ accusations against Moitra were originally brought up by Dubey.
He predicted them on claims made by Supreme Court counsel Jai Anant Dehadrai that the Trinamool Congress MP took payment in exchange for asking questions in Parliament on behalf of businessman Darshan Hiranandani. Moitra’s former partner, Dehradrai, is a Trinamool Congress MP who has consistently denied the accusations made against her. Mahua Moitra can be expelled if the House votes in the favor of Ethics Panel’s report.
