Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of Bengal, has spoken out about the controversy surrounding Mahua Moitra, a member of the Trinamool Congress, and his impending expulsion from the Lok Sabha.
Mamata Banerjee’s Commentary
“Mahua Moitra’s expulsion from the Lok Sabha is being planned… but this will help her before (the 2024 general) election,” Banerjee said on Thursday at a Kolkata event. She was criticising the ruling BJP for using central investigative agencies to target opposition parties. “Central agencies targetting opposition leaders at present will go after BJP, following the 2024 election,” she said, “This government at the centre is there for three more months.”
Banerjee’s Previous Silence
Banerjee had declined to talk about the controversy surrounding Moitra, who is suspected of accepting bribes from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in order to ask questions in Parliament that are directed towards the Narendra Modi government, until this brief but important message of support.
Abhishek Banerjee’s Earlier Commentary
Before now, Abhishek Banerjee, the National General Secretary of the Trinamool party, was the only prominent leader to speak out about Mahua Moitra, and even then, it was only in passing. Mr. Banerjee referred to Moitra as a “victim of politics” on November 9. “(From) what I read of the Ethics Committee report, they have said an investigation should happen against her. (But) if you do not have anything against Mahua (Moitra) and it is the subject of investigation, why has an expulsion been recommended?” Banerjee asked.
Abhishek Banerjee’s Assertion
“I feel Mahua (Moitra) is competent enought to fight her battles on her own. They (the BJP) have been victimising me for four years too… it is their standard practice,” he declared. Prior to that, Derek O’Brien, a Rajya Sabha MP for the Trinamool Party, merely stated that the party would make a suitable decision following the conclusion of the ethics panel investigation. This month, the investigation came to an end after a contentious hearing during which Moitra accused the committee of recording her statement with “filthy” questions.
Committee’s Recommendations
The committee suggested in its report, which is currently being reviewed by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, that Moitra be barred from the legislature during the Winter Session that begins next month. Her actions were deemed “highly objectionable, unethical, heinous, and criminal” by the committee.
