Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that the recent violence in West Bengal’s Rishra town was not the result of communal violence but rather criminal activity carried out by thugs purportedly employed by the BJP.
“Violence is not Bengal’s culture. BJP has brought in hired ‘goondas’ from outside. This is not communal violence, this is criminal violence. You saw the video of this young man, dancing with a firearm,” In a event she said in Khejuri in Purba Medinipur district.
Before of the unrest, Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose visited Rishra in the Hooghly district and claimed assured action against those responsible. The governor had been in Darjeeling for a G20 conference, but he hurried to Rishra instead.
“There will be solid action by all enforcement agencies. We will never allow miscreants to take law in hand, police will come down heavily on them. Bengal has been suffering for a long time, we will put an end to it,” the Governor said.
Stone-pelting near a level crossing in Rishra led the suspension of train service
According to Railways, last night’s stone-pelting near a level crossing in Rishra led the suspension of train service on the Howrah-Bandel route for about three hours. After midnight, train traffic resumed.
The town was restless this morning. After police enacted prohibitory orders, the majority of stores remained closed and most people remained inside. According to a senior officer, marches were also held in Rishra and the neighbouring Serampore by police and riot control officers.
Internet access is still blocked as authorities work to stop rumours. In Serampore, the state police also took down a stage that had been built up for a protest led by state BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar, citing a lack of peace and order.
Number of vehicles were set on fire
As a result of conflicts that occurred during Ram Navami protests, the nearby districts of Hooghly and Howrah in Kolkata have been on fire. During a fight between two parties in Howrah on Thursday, a number of vehicles were set on fire. Police had to use tear gas shells to contain the situation after public property was vandalised.
The BJP and the Trinamool, which are in power, are involved in a political war as a result of the violent incidents. Abhishek Banerjee, the general secretary of Trinamool, has charged the BJP with plotting the violence for political purposes.
Based on a video that Mr. Banerjee—who is also Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew—shared, a 19-year-old guy from Munger, Bihar, has been detained. In the footage, Sumit Shaw can be seen holding a gun.
The BJP claims that the video Mr. Banerjee shared is not from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad-organized gathering in Howrah. The Trinamool leader is being investigated after the party accused him of defaming Hindus.
