In a major security breach, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was attacked by a man during a public programme at his hometown Bakhtiyarpur near Patna on Sunday.
The incident, which was caught on camera, took place when Nitish was about to pay his respects to the statue of Shilbhadra Yaji, a freedom fighter from the state, at a local hospital complex.
Video footage showed the man, in his late 20s or early 30s, walking up the dais and trying to land a blow on the chief minister’s face. Clad in a T-shirt and trousers, the assailant was soon dragged off by the security personnel.
The accused has been identified as Shankar alias Chhotu, 25, a resident of Mohammadpur area in Bakhtiyarpur. He runs a small jewellery shop in the area.
Following the incident, the security personnel immediately held the man and handed him over to the local police. He is currently being interrogated at a local police station.
More information regarding the incident is awaited.
This is not the first such incident. In November 2020, onions were thrown towards Nitish Kumar while he was addressing an election rally in Harlakhi in Madhubani district.
Initially taken aback, he maintained his cool during the incient and said, “Khoob phenko-khoob phenko” (throw more) even as security men formed a cordon around the CM. He then asked security personnel to leave the perpetrator aside saying, “don’t pay attention to him.”
