Manipur violence: Govt announces compensation package, jobs for kin of those killed in clashes

Manipur violence: The central and Manipur state government on Tuesday announced compensation package for those who died in the ethnic violence in the state. The affected families will receive a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each, officials said on Tuesday.

Besides, one family member of each victim will also be provided with a job. The centre and the state together will bear the compensation amount, officials added.

The decision to announce compensation was announced late on Monday, during a meeting between the Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh, reports said.

Dedicated phone lines to quell rumours

Officials said the government had also decided to set up dedicated telephone lines which will be used to dispel rumour mongering which has hampered the process to calm down the situation and bring peace to the troubled state.

The meeting also decided to ensure that essential items such as petrol, LPG gas, rice and other food products are made available in large quantities to check prices.

Shah arrived in Imphal on Monday night. He is accompanied by the Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla and the Director of the Intelligence Bureau Tapan Kumar Deka.

Shah meets women leaders

On Tuesday the Home Minister met a group of women leaders in Manipur. After meeting them, Shah said, “together we are committed to ensuring peace and prosperity in the state”.

Amit Shah also met a delegation of civil society organisations in Manipur, said a spokesperson from the MHA.

Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan on Tuesday said challenges in Manipur persisted. But he expressed hope that things will settle down soon. He also said the situation in the north-eastern state now was not related to insurgency.

So far 80 people have died in Manipur violence since ethnic rioting began on May 3,said the officials.

Ethnic clashes broke out in Manipur after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts on May 3 to protest the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
