Manipur Violence: Several incidents of shooting at civilians and battles between militants and security forces that erupted in Imphal on Sunday morning resulted in at least two deaths and 12 injuries. According to police sources speaking to news agency PTI, suspected Kuki insurgents opened fire on a person at Phayeng in the Imphal West district, leaving one person dead and another with gunshot wounds.
Security Operations to Disarm Communities Spark Conflict in Manipur
According to officials, the most recent conflicts started when the army and paramilitary groups started conducting operations to disarm communities in an effort to restore peace. While speaking with reporters at the state secretariat, the chief minister asserted that the most recent battle “is not between communities but between militants and security forces.” Meanwhile, the Manipur chief minister announced on Sunday that security forces have killed over 40 armed insurgents since they launched an operation to restore peace to Manipur, which has been plagued by ethnic violence. The militants set fire to homes and opened fire on bystanders.

Security Forces Respond with Counterattacks
According to Singh, there have been instances of armed militants using sniper, M-16, and AK-47 rifles to fire at bystanders. In counterattacks, security forces specifically targeted these militants. The CM pleaded with the populace to “have faith in the government and support the security forces” and encouraged them to not obstruct the movement of security officers. We have endured adversity for a very long time, and we won’t ever allow the state to fall apart’, Singh declared. According to Singh, the state police have been conducting operations in 38 sensitive regions that have been identified.

Imphal Imposes Stricter Curfew and Internet Ban Amidst Escalating Violence
District officials in Imphal East and West districts have reduced the 11-hour curfew relaxation period to just six and a half hours as a result of violence in the recent ten hours. The state-wide ban on internet access has been extended by the Manipur government for an additional five days, through May 31. The extension comes in the midst of sporadic acts of violence, including reported arson.
