Manipur Violence: Ongoing violence in the border regions of Manipur persisted on Thursday, with authorities reporting a death toll of at least eight individuals and 18 others sustaining injuries in Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts. The violence continues from a prolonged conflict between the Kuki and Meitei communities, which has been ongoing since August 29. Chief Minister N Biren Singh has described the situation as “critical” and called upon the public to remain calm.
Violence continues to take lives in Manipur
In the past 72 hours, a prolonged gun battle between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur’s Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts has resulted in the loss of eight lives and left 18 others wounded, including two security personnel, as reported by officials on Thursday.
Furthermore, new incidents of gunfire were reported in the nearby Chingphei and Khousabung regions of Churachandpur district. The conflict initially erupted on August 29 when a 30-year-old village volunteer was killed in heavy firing in the Khoirentak area. On the same day, another individual lost their life when a country-made firearm accidentally misfired, striking them in the face near Narainsena village in Bishnupur, according to officials.
One individual, who had sustained injuries from bomb fragments during the violence on Wednesday, tragically passed away while en route to Guwahati through Mizoram, according to officials. Another injured person, also suffering from splinter injuries, succumbed to their injuries around 9 am on Thursday at Churachandpur district hospital, where they were receiving treatment. Additionally, officials reported that four more individuals had lost their lives due to gunshot wounds in the past 48 hours, although further details are pending.
Shutdown in Churachandpur
The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) has issued a call for an immediate emergency shutdown in Churachandpur. This shutdown, effective immediately, exempts essential services such as water and medical supplies, as stated in an ITLF announcement.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh has voiced deep concern regarding the current state of affairs in the state, describing it as “critical.” He identified demographic imbalances resulting from the influx of illegal immigrants and deforestation as underlying causes of the ongoing crisis. Singh emphasized that the state is currently facing a critical juncture, prompting him to approach every decision with extreme caution.
