Details of Manipur Incident Surface in FIR Filing

The incident in the Kangpokpi district is listed as having occurred on May 4 in a police complaint. But on June 21, the FIR was filed in the Thoubal district. Unknown persons are accused of murder, gang rape, and kidnapping. According to the FIR, “All three women were physically forced to remove their clothes and were stripped naked in front of the mob.” According to the complaint, on May 4, one day after the outbreak of unrest in Manipur, between 800 and 1,000 people entered a village there while carrying high-tech weaponry such AK rifles, SLR rifles, INSAS rifles, and.303 rifles. They are accused of robbing stores and damaging homes and buildings. They are allegedly believed to be Meitei community members and members of groups like Meetei Leepun, Kangleipak Kanba Lup, Arambai Tenggol, and the World Meitei Council. Five locals, two men and three women, managed to flee into the adjacent woodland amidst the ruckus. Nevertheless, they were taken hostage by a mob about two km from a police station. The accusation claims that after killing one guy, the mob made three ladies strip off their clothing. A 19-year-old woman was allegedly subjected to gang sexual assault; when her brother attempted to stop it, he was slain. The women then made their getaway.

Opposition Parties Unite in Condemnation

Opposition parties have responded angrily to the incident and have questioned the BJP-led Manipur administration. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) advised individuals to speak out against the issue without disseminating the upsetting images. “AAP condemns this horrendous and continuous harassment of the helpless people of Manipur. AAP requests all citizens to refrain from sharing gruesome videos of helpless women. The public should raise their voice against this heinous act without sharing the video,” the party said in a statement. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, “The incident in Manipur is very shameful and condemnable. This kind of heinous act cannot be tolerated in Indian society.” The Trinamool Congress also denounced the tragedy and urged PM Modi to speak out about the violence in Manipur.

Opposition Leaders Slam BJP’s Silence

“All claims of Nari Shakti by the BJP ring hollow if we cannot ensure justice for the women of Manipur. Once again, we implore PM to break his 78-day silence & stand by the people of Manipur,” TMC said in a tweet. Congresswoman Priyanka Gandhi questioned PM Modi’s inaction regarding the bloodshed in Manipur. “Why is the Central Government, Prime Minister sitting blindly on the violent incidents in Manipur? Do such pictures and violent incidents not disturb them?” she tweeted. Since then, more than 150 individuals have passed away and numerous others have suffered injuries. In some areas of Manipur, homes were vandalised, stores were robbed, and there was violence. The tribal population of Manipur, which includes the Naga and Kuki people, makes about 40% of the total population and is primarily concentrated in the hill regions, whereas Meiteis make up around 53% of the population and reside primarily in the Imphal Valley.
