This kind of incident has happened before
This is the second incident of suicide of a girl after the Assam government launched a crackdown against child marriage in the state. Earlier this month, a 17-year-old girl killed herself in Assam’s Cachar district after her parents broke their promise and refused to marry the boy she loved. In another case, a 23-year-old woman fainted in Golagunk when she saw her husband and father arrested in a child marriage case in Dhubri district and police taking them to court.
This campaign will continue till 2026
To reduce the infant mortality rate and maternal mortality rate in the state, the Assam government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has decided to take action against child marriage in the state. Those marrying girls below the age of 14 are being booked under the POCSO Act, while those marrying girls between the ages of 14 and 18 are being prosecuted under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that this campaign will continue till 2026 assembly elections. However, the action has drawn criticism from the opposition and has triggered protests on behalf of the affected families at various places across the state.
