MCD Mayoral Elections: AAP vs. BJP Face-off Again. Here is Everything You Need to Know

MCD Mayoral Elections: Today’s election for the next mayor and deputy mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is about to take place.

As the procedural formalities are being completed, tight security precautions have been arranged and last-minute preparations are in progress.
The home premises on the fourth floor of A-block in the civic centre have reportedly been decorated to hold the Delhi mayoral elections, according to sources.

According to an official report, “Arrangements have been made to sit 300 people which include all the councillors and officers including the commissioner, director, deputy director and others.”

They also mentioned that each of the 250 newly-elected municipal council members who will be using their voting rights to choose the speaker and second-in-command of the house have received a provisional election ID.
Out of the 10 councillors, five come from the Civil Lines zone, four from the Narela zone, and one from the Central zone, according to sources.

10 Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs, as well as 14 MLAs will vote

In addition to them, 10 Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs, as well as 14 MLAs, will vote in the mayoral elections.

The MLAs were chosen by Ram Niwas Goel, Speaker of the Delhi Assembly, with one coming from the BJP and the others from the AAP.

Aaley Mohammed Iqbal, a councillor from Chandni Mahal ward, will run for deputy mayor, which is notable given that the AAP has nominated Shelly Oberoi, a first-time councillor from East Patel Nagar, as its candidate for mayor.

Rekha Gupta and Kamal Bagdi, on the other hand, are the candidates the BJP has put forth for the elections for the positions of mayor and deputy mayor, respectively.

Bagdi was first elected from Ram Nagar, while Gupta has served on the council for three terms from Shalimar Bagh.

Power struggle between LG and Kejriwal intensifies

In the meantime, the power struggle between Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP intensified earlier in the day when Saxena nominated a BJP leader as the temporary Speaker to oversee the mayoral election on Friday.

Kejriwal expressed his “dismay and consternation,” accusing Saxena of working around his administration and engaging in “blatantly unconstitutional, colorable exercise of power”.

Satya Sharma, a BJP councillor, was chosen as the pro-tem Speaker by Saxena as opposed to Mukesh Goyal, an AAP member who had been suggested by the Delhi government.

It should be recalled that in the first municipal vote held following the redistricting and merger of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) last year, the AAP had won 134 of the 250 wards.

With 104 seats, the BJP came in second, and the Congress received nine.

In the meantime, the Congress declared on Thursday that it will not be participating in the elections on Friday.

The three council members who will represent the party in the Delhi Municipal Corporation were named in a letter from the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee.
