Members of Jain community stage protest at Jantar Mantar, demand death sentence for accused in Karnataka Jain monk murder case

Jantar Mantar: Protestors from the Jain Community have undertaken a silent protest at Jantar Mantar in the national capital. The protest is lodged over murder of a Jain monk Kamkumar Nandi Maharaj in Karnataka. The protestors are demanding death sentence for the accused and have also called for a CBI probe in the matter.

Monk Kamkumar Nandi Maharaj was killed at Nandi Parvat Ashram at Hirekodi village in Belagavi district of Karnataka. After the murder, the body of the monk was thrown in a borewell pit in Khatakbhavi village of Raibag. The Jain community has held several protests since the gruesome murder of the monk.

Murder over money

The Karnataka police have arrested Narayana Basappa Madi and Hassan Dalayath in connection with the case. As per reports Narayana had borrowed several lakhs from the victim. The two had made acquaintance when Narayana supplied sand to the monk’s ashram for construction. When the monk asked for the money to be returned back, Narayana started to avoid him,. Frustrated by repeated calls from Kamkumar Nandi Maharaj, Narayana with his diver Hassan attempted to kill the monk with electric shocks. When the attempt failed, the strangled him to death by a towel.

After the incident a police officer stated “On July 6, manager of the Basadi Bheemappa Ugare lodged a complaint about the missing Jain Muni. We started investigation and detained two people in connection with the case.”

The Karnataka state SDRF team and local police conducted the search mission for dead monk’s body.
