ISRO: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) senior officials have announced that the test flight showcasing Gaganyaan’s abort capabilities is scheduled for October 25, marking a significant milestone in India’s pursuit of its inaugural human spaceflight mission.

A senior official from the Indian space agency has mentioned that the abort capability demonstration is anticipated later in the month, contingent on the smooth execution of plans. The official stated, “Mission preparation is going as per plan. We are targeting for the abort test demonstration to happen around October 25. After that is achieved, we will go ahead with preparations of the uncrewed mission.”
During the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) foundation day on September 26, Isro chairman S Somanath discussed the intentions to conduct the abort test demonstration in October, refraining from disclosing specific dates. The Gaganyaan project’s objective is to demonstrate ISRO’s capability for human spaceflight by launching a three-member crew into a 400km orbit for a three-day mission and ensuring their safe return.

Anticipated to embark on its journey in the last quarter of 2024 or early 2025, the Gaganyaan mission involves astronauts currently undergoing training at several ISRO facilities. Recently, the Indian Air Force (IAF) unveiled images of these astronauts, referred to as ‘Gaganauts,’ while keeping their identities undisclosed.
The Gaganyaan initiative coincides with a prosperous period for ISRO, with the Chandrayaan-3 mission successfully landing near the lunar south pole, the Aditya-L1 solar mission expected to launch by February 2024, and various other interplanetary missions in progress.
