MK Stalin: Tamil Nadu CM Urges PM Modi to Avoid Hindi-Centric Events in Non-Hindi Speaking States

The CM’s suggestions aim to balance the cultural and linguistic diversity of the country while ensuring that no language is given undue prominence over others.

MK Stalin: In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has requested that the Union Government refrain from organizing Hindi language-oriented events in non-Hindi speaking states. The letter, dated October 18, 2024, expresses concerns regarding the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Chennai Doordarshan being combined with Hindi Month celebrations, which Stalin sees as potentially undermining local languages.

Call for Equal Celebration of Local and Classical Languages

In his letter, CM Stalin emphasizes that the Indian Constitution does not recognize any language as the national language, pointing out that both Hindi and English are used for official purposes such as legislation and communication between the Union and State governments. He argues that promoting Hindi in non-Hindi speaking regions could be perceived as an effort to diminish the importance of other languages.

The Tamil Nadu CM further suggests that if the Union Government insists on organizing Hindi-centric events, it should also celebrate the respective local languages in each state with the same enthusiasm. Additionally, Stalin proposes that special events be held to honor the richness of the classical languages recognized by the Government of India, which he believes would foster stronger relationships across states.

Stalin’s Push for Linguistic Inclusivity

Stalin’s letter comes in response to concerns about linguistic imposition, a sensitive issue in Tamil Nadu. By advocating for the celebration of all classical languages, he aims to promote inclusivity and respect for India’s diverse linguistic heritage. The CM’s suggestions aim to balance the cultural and linguistic diversity of the country while ensuring that no language is given undue prominence over others.
