Mumbai: Several areas of Mumbai were left waterlogged after early monsoon thrashed the city on Wednesday. Hindmata, Gandhi Market in King Circle, Dadar TT were some of the areas that recorded high rain fill. According to IMD’s prediction, a high tide of 4.16 meter is expected to hit the city at 11.43 am.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has already issued yellow warning for the city of Mumbai anticipating heavy rainfall over the weekend. Due to waterlogging in several places, a few vaccination centres have been closed in Mumbai.
“It’s monsoon arrival in Mumbai today,” Dr Jayanta Sarkar, the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Mumbai office chief, was quoted by news agency PTI.
The rains, that were supposed to hit the financial capital on June 10, are moving faster and has already reached Kerala.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Mumbai and its eastern and western suburbs recorded 48.49 mm, 66.99 mm and 48.99 mm rain, respectively, in 24 hours ending 8 am.
Local train services – the lifeline of the city – have been largely unaffected so far, although services from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Kurla have been suspended since 9.50 am due to waterlogging and heavy rainfall and waterlogging between Sion and Kurla.
BMC chief Iqbal Singh Chahal cautioned the officials and asked for early preparedness. He urged officials to ensure dewatering pumps were in place, manholes were covered, tree trimming and cutting was done in order to safeguard lives of citizens.
