Monsoon Mayhem: As many as 32 people have died in rain-related incidents across seven states since Wednesday evening, as monsoon mayhem continued to wreak havoc in India. Record single-day rainfall submerged Delhi-NCR, while cloudbursts in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh claimed the lives of at least 14 people, with several others reported missing.
Statewise Casualties
According to the latest figures, the casualties are as follows:
- Uttarakhand: 10 deaths
- Himachal Pradesh: 4 deaths
- Delhi: 5 deaths
- Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh: 2 deaths
- Gurugram, Haryana: 3 deaths
- Jaipur, Rajasthan: 3 deaths
- Bihar: 5 deaths
Tragedy in Kerala
In Kerala, over 250 people have been killed in massive landslides in Wayanad. Rescue operations continued on Thursday as search efforts for those missing intensified. The Indian Army has rescued nearly 1,000 people, but 220 individuals are still unaccounted for. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated that the rescued individuals have been temporarily shifted to camps and that rehabilitation efforts will commence as soon as possible.
Flash Floods in Jammu and Kashmir
Heavy rainfall triggered flash floods in the Dachan area of Kishtwar in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday. Cloudbursts in the upper reaches led to massive water discharges, causing significant damage to bridges and buildings near the drains. Rivers in Rajouri district overflowed, resulting in severe waterlogging on roads.
Incident in Jaipur
In Jaipur, a woman, her niece, and another man drowned after rainwater entered the basement of their house on Thursday morning. The bodies were recovered after an hours-long rescue operation involving the use of mud pumps to remove the water. Officials reported that the passage to the basement was narrow and deep, complicating the rescue efforts.
Disaster Management Advisories
The Disaster Management Department has issued advisories urging people to exercise caution and avoid areas prone to flooding and landslides. Residents in affected regions are advised to stay indoors and follow safety protocols.
