Monsoon Session 2023: The Monsoon Session of this year’s Parliament will begin on July 11 and is scheduled to end on August 11. The Central government has urged all political parties to create an atmosphere for productive discussions. This will mark the first session to be held in the new Parliament building which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi on May 28 this year. The session will likely have around 20 sittings during which a significant bills are likely to be tabled and discussed.
First session in new Parliament building
A lot of preparation has been carried out in the last few days in the new Parliament building ahead of its inaugural session. The workers are putting final touch-ups in the basement level of building while audio, video and other systems in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha chambers are being tested. During the inauguration of new Parliament Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said the building was a “reflection of the aspirations and dreams of 140 crore Indians”. The inauguration was boycotted by major opposition parties including INC, TMC and AAP among others who protested against Prime Minister presiding over inauguration instead of President Droupadi Murmu.
Key bills likely to be discussed
Going into the Monsson session many major bills are likely to be presented and discussed over. The central government will likely introduce a bill to replace Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Ordinance which provided Delhi government greater autonomy over its services. The new bill will negate the autonomy provided to Delhi and will diminish its historical trajectory of becoming a full-fledged state. The National Research Foundation Bill which is aimed at creation of a new agency to fund research in arenas of science and technology. The Prime Minster has also indicated at likely introduction of legislation over Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The bill is expected to attract most traction and discussion in this session.
