Moon Mission: Chandrayaan-3, the spacecraft for India’s ambitious third Moon mission, successfully completed its fifth and final lunar orbit maneouvre on Wednesday, putting it even closer to the lunar surface. With this, the spacecraft has finished its manoeuvres to go to the moon and will now get ready for the separation of the propulsion module and the lander module, according to ISRO.
“Today’s successful firing, needed for a short duration, has put Chandrayaan-3 into an orbit of 153 km x 163 km, as intended. With this, the lunar bound maneuvres are completed.It’s time for preparations as the Propulsion Module and the Lander Module gear up for their separate journeys,” the national space agency tweeted.
On August 17, it was planned to separate the lander module from the spacecraft’s propulsion module.
After being launched on July 14, Chandrayaan-3 entered the lunar orbit on August 5. Three subsequent orbit reduction manoeuvres were then performed on August 6, 9, and 14 to get the spacecraft closer to the Moon.
As the mission advances, ISRO is making a series of manoeuvres to gradually decrease Chandrayaan-3’s orbit and place it over the lunar poles.
On August 23, the spacecraft is slated to do a soft landing in the Moon’s south polar area.
