Manipur Violence: The delegation of MPs met with the floor leaders of the opposition’s I.N.D.I.A. or Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance on Monday, one day after wrapping up a two-day visit to Manipur, which has been plagued by ethnic violence, to inform them about the visit and to develop a plan of action before the Parliament session. Sonia Gandhi, the party’s parliamentary leader, and Mallikarjun Kharge, its president, were both present at the meeting, which took place in the party’s office in Parliament House.
Seeking Solutions for Manipur’s Grave Crisis
To assess the situation on the ground in the northeastern state, Manipur, which has been gripped by civil upheaval since May 3, a total of 21 MPs travelled there. In addition, they visited aid centres and spoke with sufferers. The team included Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who called the situation in Manipur “grave.” “Our demand is only to hold a discussion on no-confidence motion. The situation in Manipur is very serious. The country needs to be saved. BJP and its alliances should also tour Manipur. Everyone needs to analyse the situation in Manipur,” he told the media ahead of the meeting. Raghav Chadha, the head of the Aam Aadmi Party, stated that following the meeting, the coalition will tell the public of the Opposition’s next move over Manipur. “The I.N.D.I.A alliance has come after wiping off the tears of the people of Manipur. Today, the MPs of the I.N.D.I.A bloc will explain the situation in Manipur in the meeting, after which we will inform you about our next move in regard to Manipur” he said.
Urging Governor for Peace in Manipur, Demanding PM’s Response
On the second day of their visit, on Sunday, the team met with the governor of Manipur, Anusuiya Uikey, and presented her with a message asking her to bring peace and harmony back to the state. The memorandum referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s silence on the matter as “his brazen indifference” to the violence. “You are also requested to inform the Union Government of the complete breakdown of law and order in Manipur for the last 89 days so that they may intervene in the precarious situation in Manipur to restore peace and normalcy,” it read. Today’s parliamentary proceedings are going to be overshadowed by the Manipur issue as the Opposition is determined that Modi speak to both Houses about the issue before there is a discussion. Last Wednesday, the Opposition also introduced a no-confidence vote against the government in an effort to compel Modi to address the issue. The government, however, denied the demand for the PM’s remark and stated that it was prepared for a conversation.
