Muhammad Iqbal: Delhi University’s (DU) vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh on Tuesday defended the decision to drop a chapter on renowned Urdu poet Muhammad Iqbal from the political science syllabus. He said that though Iqbal composed the song, he never believed in that. “Iqbal served India by composing the popular song ‘Sare Jahan Se Acha’ but he never believed in that”, Singh said.
The Delhi University’s (DU) Academic Council earlier passed a motion to remove a chapter on Iqbal from a course titled ‘Modern Indian Thinkers’ for BA (Honours) Political Science syllabus.
Chapter on Savarkar
However, a section on Savarkar will be offered as an elective to students who opt for the BA programme with political science as their major.
Speaking on the removal of the chapter on Iqbal, DU vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh said, “I don’t know why we were teaching his (Muhammad Iqbal’s) part in the syllabus for the past 75 years. I agree that he served India by composing the popular song ‘Sare Jahan Se Acha’ but he never believed in that.”
The decision to remove the chapter on Iqbal was taken during the discussion on the undergraduate course in the 1,014th Academic Council meeting of the University of Delhi. Singh said, “Those who laid the foundation to break India should not be part of the syllabus”.
Philosophy of Dr Ambedkar
Additionally, the council approved the recommendations of the Standing Committee regarding the BA course proposed by the Department of Philosophy. The approved courses include the “Philosophy of Dr Ambedkar,” “Philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi,” and “Philosophy of Swami Vivekananda.”
The V-C also urged the Head of the Department of Philosophy to explore the possibility of including Savitribai Phule in the curriculum.
