Mulayam Singh Yadav: Age-old politician and veteran leader, Mulayam, passed away today after battling long with the illness. Though, he had a long and remarkable career, his life was also filled with many controversies and family fueds. Two such notable were, his marriage to Sadhana Gupta and his fued with Akhilesh Yadav before 2017’s election.
Mulayam Singh married Sadhana Gupta in 2003
Sadhna was wed to Chandra Prakash Gupta, a Farrukhabad grocery store owner, on July 4, 1986, before she wed Mulayam Singh Yadav in 2003. In 1990, they got divorced. Sadhna Gupta met Mulayam Singh after divorcing Chandra Prakash Gupta, her first husband. Akhilesh Yadav writes about the relationship between Mulayam Singh and Sadhna in his biography, Badlav Ki Lehar. He claimed that Sadhna took care of Mulayam’s mother Murti Devi, who was frequently ill.

In one case described in the book, Sadhna stepped in to stop a nurse giving the wrong injection to Murti Devi. At this point, Mulayam started to develop feelings for Sadhna.
Mulayam and Sadhna were wed shortly after. Yadav and Sadhna had an age gap difference of 20 years. In 2007, Mulayam Singh Yadav admitted in an affidavit that Sadhana Gupta was his wife and Prateek Yadav was his son, giving legal proof of their relationship.
According to rumours, Prateek’s school application from 1994 claimed Mulayam Singh Yadav as his father. After the passing of Malti Yadav, mother of Akhilesh Yadav. Mulayam Singh Yadav, in 2003, wed Sadhna Gupta, shortly after which she gained attention.
Sadhna Gupta, too, breathed her last on 9th of July, 2022, at the same Gurugram’s Medanta Hospital.
2016 Fued with son Akhilesh Yadav
The Yadav family has been split into two battling factions since the young Akhilesh Yadav overtook Mulayam’s brother Shivpal Singh Yadav as chief minister of Uttar Pradesh in 2012. Ram Gopal Yadav, the National General Secretary and the cousin of Akhilesh’s father, supported one of the groups. Amar Singh, a friend, and Shivpal Yadav, Mulayam Singh’s brother and state chief of party, supported the opposing side, which was headed by Mulayam Singh.

Since his father has consistently supported Shivpal over Akhilesh, many saw Akhilesh’s firing of his uncle twice from his cabinet as a direct challenge to his father. Mulayam Yadav dismissed his son Akhilesh and his cousin Ram Gopal from the party on December 30, 2016, citing indiscipline, although he later reversed his decision. Following the national convention of the party on January 1, 2017, Akhilesh responded by removing his father from the position of party president and replacing him with the title of party chief patron. Ram Gopal Yadav, Mulayam’s cousin who had called the national executive convention, was immediately dismissed after he referred to it as illegal.
Mulayam’s ruling was overturned by the Indian Election Commission, which decided that Ram Gopal Yadav had the power to call the executive convention. As a result, Akhilesh Yadav was formally installed as the party’s new national leader.
