In December 2021, 14 people were killed in the firing of army personnel in Nagaland. Which was being investigated by SIT. Now, quoting several media reports, it has been reported that the government has refused to sanction the prosecution of 30 jawans. Nagaland Police has given this information.
The government did not give permission to prosecute the army personnel
In its statement, the Nagaland Police has said that the Department of Military Affairs, Ministry of Defense and the Government of India have denied sanction to prosecute all the 30 accused jawans. The names of these army personnel are included in the charge sheet of the SIT probing the case. The Nagaland Police has informed the court about not getting approval from the government.
On December 4, 2021, six local laborers working in a coal mine in Mon district of Nagaland were traveling in a pickup truck. In the misunderstanding, the army personnel mistook them for extremists and in this misunderstanding, the army personnel opened fire on the pickup, killing six youths in the pickup. Enraged by the incident, people torched two vehicles of the army personnel and started the violence, after which the army personnel again fired and in this firing seven more people were killed. The incident saw massive protests the next day and violence broke out during which a youth was killed by security forces.
In this way, a total of 14 people died in this incident. An army soldier also lost his life in this violence
Government’s approval is necessary for the trial of army personnel
The state government constituted an SIT to investigate the incident. The SIT sought permission from the Union Ministry of Defense on 24 March 2022 to prosecute the accused army personnel. The army personnel were charged with murder, attempt to murder and destruction of evidence. The approval of the Center is required to prosecute army personnel for action taken in the line of duty.
