Narendra Modi arrives in South Africa to participate in the three-day BRICS summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in South Africa to participate in the three-day BRICS summit, beginning today. This marks the first in-person BRICS summit since 2019, as the previous three were conducted online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Speculation surrounds a potential bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Modi and China’s President Xi Jinping, although no confirmation has been provided yet.

Deputy President Paul Shipokosa Mashatile warmly welcomed Prime Minister Modi at the airport. The summit will be attended by leaders from China, Russia, and host nation South Africa. Prime Minister Modi’s official schedule is still in development, as per statements from India’s Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra. India has expressed a positive intent towards the expansion of BRICS and maintains an open mindset in this regard.

One of Prime Minister Modi’s first engagements will be the BRICS Business Forum Leaders’ Dialogue at 4 pm local time (7.30 pm IST). He is scheduled to address the forum for 10 minutes at 4.30 pm, followed by President Xi Jinping’s address. The BRICS Leaders Retreat, attended by various leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin via video link, will focus on global developments and the issue of expanding BRICS membership.

It was recently revealed that more than 40 countries have shown interest in joining the BRICS grouping, which represents around 40 percent of the world’s population. Countries such as Argentina, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Cuba, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Comoros, Gabon, and Kazakhstan have all expressed interest in membership.
